Are you familiar with the films ‘The Holiday’ in 2006 and ‘Bridget Jones’? They have one thing in common. That’s Shere!

Shere Village, Guildford

Stephanie and I haven’t been out for a while so I decided to bring her out of town for a change. Dubbed the prettiest village in Surrey, we headed out one afternoon to Shere for a date.

Here are 4 places you should visit:

River Tillingbourne, Shere

River Tillingbourne – this tiny river provides life to the towns and villages in Surrey Hills. It is hidden from the majestic views of Surrey. The trail runs from Wooton on the east and ends in the city of Guildford on the west joining River Wey. When you arrive in Shere village centre, you’d immediately spot tourists flocking and dipping their toes and feet.

Eat-in the White Horse pub – if you’ve watched the film ‘The Holiday’ this is where Jude Law, who played Kate Winslet’s brother, met Cameron Diaz and had their drinks.

To start, we decided to get the Sharing Board rather than getting their camembert. The board was generously filled with lamb and rosemary koftas, Korean BBQ chicken strips, crispy salt & pepper squid, garlic & coriander flatbreads, houmous, and some dips.

Smothered Chicken

Stephanie had the Hand-Battered Atlantic Cod with chips, tartare sauce and peas whilst I devoured on their Smothered Chicken smoked cheese, BBQ sauce, back bacon, dressed rocket & courgette salad, onion rings, chips. Our meals were paired with gin and a mocktail for me. You can check their full menu here.

When dining in White Horse Shere during Spring and Summer, we recommend you eat and stay in the garden for you to enjoy the sun!

Visit the Church of St James – only a few stones’ throw from White Horse is St James Church. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, the church was featured in the Bridget Jones film. Like most of the old churches in England, a graveyard surrounds it. It’s a little bit creepy but you’ll uncover names and dates revealing the deep history of Shere’s place of worship.

Lastly, go to the Shere Museum. Uncover Shere’s history, see living artefacts and hear stories from the museum staff. Stephanie and I have learned a lot from their passionate staff who shared a lot of stories and facts that surround Shere. I highly encourage you to donate a pound to the museum. This will let them continue sharing the stories with the next generation. If you don’t have coins, there’s a
